How I Dye My Pink Hair Ombre Gradient Thing…

Jul 19, 2011 by

Yet another “long time coming” post, I promise I’m trying to catch up!

Ombré, gradient, two tone, incredibly stupid looking, call it what you like, people have been asking about my hair ever since I did it. I’ve always been really hesitant in providing instructions etc because I’m not a hair dresser, I’m not a colour expert and I also don’t want to be responsible for people giving it a try and not being happy with the results *_*

So rather than an actual tutorial this is more of a post that I can direct people to if they are really interested in how I do it. I’m not suggesting that people try this at all because it depends on the type of dye you use, your hair type and a lot of other factors so please talk to a hair dresser before you do anything!

My hair is made up of 3 colours: blonde, pink and copper. This is my routine:

  • I bleach my roots maybe once a month (or leave it longer if I’m lazy/feel like wearing a lot of hats). I use a pre-colour stripper and do not use toner so it retains that orange tone which blends well with the other two colours. They’ve just discontinued the bleach that I use so not sure which brand I will be changing to at the moment >_<
  • The copper tips were originally achieved through a Schwarzcopf 8 wash colour (Aztec Copper) which never… washed out. I had planned on touching this up once a month too but it’s been a very long time and it’s still in there so I’ll probably only touch up  when it needs it. The pink only tints the copper area slightly so it provides a nice backdrop and a nice variation in the colour.
  • The pink is done once a week, or if I’m feeling lazy once every few weeks. At the beginning I did it every 4 days but that was too much effort/expensive so I have since scaled back. The dye I use is called Wakk Stain but it’s not something I would recommend. For a few months I thought it was drying out my hair like crazy but the cause ended up being a hair treatment that wasn’t suited to my hair type, even still I probably wouldn’t recommend this dye because it washes out so quickly. The fact that it does wash out so quickly and doesn’t stain skin is perfect for my needs at the moment though because it makes it easier to move around into the correct place, goes on quickly and can be removed if you make a mistake. I think Priceline has stopped selling this now too anyway (or at least the ones near me have) so I will be experimenting with other dyes in the next few months.
So with all of that out of the way, this is how I do the pink parts! Again if you intend to try this please go to a hair dresser!!

So hopefully that answers any questions and fingers crossed you enjoyed!

    • :D Thank you so much, it’s just nice because it’s freshly bleached and clean haha! I’m really glad you enjoyed the video, I’m have a lot of fun making them :D

  4. Thanks. I have always wondered how you do yours! I have dark red hair and want a similar fade through dark coffee to black- I’ll give this method a try!

    • No problems! I previously had bright red to black and it worked quite nicely :D Let me know how you go but definitely talk to a hairdresser first!

  5. That’s so fun! I love gradient anything, so gradient hair is extra fab.

  6. Thanks for the lovely video! I used to have pink hair, and I loved it SO much when it had faded out to a nice cotton candy pink color :D

  7. i wish my naturally dark asian hair would take in colours more readily!

  8. Haha great video! You look so good in it, hahaha just thinking about myself when dying, not a pretty sight…. ;D I have to try that technique, especially now I got my new extensions and would really love to get some pink to my hair again! ^^

  9. Ahh I’ve always wondered how you did this! Thanks so much for the tutorial! It’s really good! :D

  10. That was a great tutorial video! Love the format and the look of it and I can see how it would really help someone wanting to achieve the same effect! I also like how you put text with the entire video – I watch at work without sound – so it’s perfect for me!

  11. Wow that was so interesting Violet! I’ve been wondering for some time how exactly you did your hair, so thanks for sharing with us! :) It’s lovely.

    Another cute tutorial !
And the slow-motion commercial was adorable and funny !
I really want to try this now, but it’d probably be a lot more difficult for me due to my black hair.

    • Hahaha thank you! Yeah doing it in black hair would be harder because I think bleach would be much harder to move around :(

  13. Oh my gosh you are lovely as usual. Good techniche. I love the slow motion commerical, LOL, funny girl. You rock!

    • Oh yeah, I wanted to suggest something to you that has been on my mind since I saw the fabulous dresses you are able to make, I just felt compelled to tell (muse) you this information, though you may have already thought about this before. You could seriously start making those dresses and selling them, they are the most beautiful I have seen in a long time. You could even get your own custom clothing tags, my Nanna (God rest her soul) was so wonderful at sewing and she had her own tags with her name in them, and they looked so good. I think she had the tags professionally made just for that. Another thing I was thinking is that since you like doing tutorials and helping people learn stuff, and have already written a successful e-book, you could write a physical book which could be sold in book stores and checked out at the public library. You’re smart enough to be an Author. You could write a few books even I bet. You are so talented Violet. God loves you and so do I. Your blog is tops. Hugs. I had to get that off of my chest, whew, and I’m glad I did because I felt you needed to hear / read it. When I get compelled like that, I know it’s important.

      • Hey Piper! Thank you for all of your awesome suggestions, you are so kind! I did actually take clothing commissions a long time ago but I don’t have much time for it anymore >_< It's so time consuming to do but very fun! So funny you mention the craft book too, I actually started writing one last year but had to stop again because I didn't have time. I do want to start it up again soon though :D Thanks so much Piper <3

    • Haha thank you Piper!

  14. I’ve always wondered how you achieve that fade effect, that’s a really clever way of doing it.
P.S: I do exactly the same thing when I’m blow-drying my hair.

  15. I don’t know if you get Directions in Aus, but it’s a semi-permanent dye I use inbetween using peroxide based hair dyes to give my red a boost (and it means I only need to do the full blown colour every 2 months!) It’s very kind on my hair too, so it might be worth have a wee gander?

I see carnation pink or the pastel pink on you :P I myself use a mix of poppy red and vermillion red, since I use it for my entire head I always need two! :D

  16. I love it! I’m doing some SERIOUS catching up on your blog…
I’m glad to hear that Wakk doesn’t stain skin because currently i’m using Fudge ‘blue hawaii’ to cancel red tones in my hair, it’s the only thing that works, but that stuff stains like crazy. My pillowcase was blue after using that stuff! So i’ve been looking for another semi-perm blue and saw Wakk but since it looked so similar to Fudge I didn’t want to try it.

I know what you mean about being reluctant to give hair dying advice by the way… my friends often ask me how to get a beige/ash colour on Asian hair, and i’m always like first you need to bleach until it’s orange bordering on yellow (‘gasp!’ they go!) and then you dye with a mix of blue and purple dye (WTF?! they go! I don’t want my hair blue!). And then they do it and come back and say ‘no difference’ and i’m like… you didn’t bleach did you? Or alternatively ‘it’s SO ORANGE’ because they didn’t listen to the blue bit because it sounded too radical. Sigh!

    • Booo to stains! I haven’t used fudge but that sounds really sucky! You totally hit the nail on the head with why I didn’t want to give advice haha! There’s always something people miss when reading the instructions which ends up being my fault XD

  17. I dye my hair a lot and I was wondering if you have any product suggestions for damaged hair? I’ve been using Argan Oil but as soon as you stop using it your hair stops getting better.

    • I have heard really good things about Argan oil, morrocan oil etc but the only think I’ve found to help mine has been a suggestion by Casey: coconut oil. She uses the actual oil but I use a Palmer’s conditioner with coconut oil as the main ingredient., it’s very nice! Also I did a review on some KMS shampoo/conditioner a while ago which really helped my hair come back from some icky damage.

Pink hair FTW – I wish I could carry it off! Plus, that’s a really neat way of applying the dye. Whenever I’ve coloured my hair at home it just gets everywhere… Now if I ever pluck up courage to go pink I’ll know what to do! >.<

    • Wooo pink hair! Dying at home can definitely end up a big mess, when I used to do mine red, it always looked like murder in the bathroom!

  19. ~ doing this today! ~ I’ll send photos
    * : ) have been blonde my whole life!

  20. Samantha

Just did that but i went a little overboard all my hair is pink oh well ill wait and see how it turns out for some reason pink doesn’t like to stay in my hair

  21. It’s worth the work, love your hair colour xxx

  22. Emily

Ive been dying my hair for years now and i have been trying to find a tutorial on how to do this thanks for posting it!. My hair isn’t nearly as long as yours but its a little longer than my shoulders so i was really weary about doing it, but I’m so glad i did!! I used manic panic hot hot pink and beyond the zone party time pink and now i have all different shades of pink in my hair, i love it!

  23. Mermel

Do you use any toner on the top blonde part of your hair ? If so what bleach and toner do you use?

  24. can you do an updated version of this? I would love to see the new products that you use and how its done. I used this technique with lilac and it worked great.
