Pretty cute right?
Well what you need is this:
- Plain canvas shoes. Mine were $10 from Target
- Permanent markers, I’m using Sharpies and Copics. Copic markers aren’t permanent but I only have 2 Sharpies so I’ll just avoid puddles in these sneakers XD
So you need to find something that inspires you for the design. I’m using a piece of sticky leopard fabric from The Sticker Monster.

So first thing’s first, take the laces out :D

Practice drawing your design on a piece of paper before you do it on the shoes.

I’m doing leopard print so I started by drawing the inside blobs in light purple.

Make sure to make them odd sizes, if they are all completely even it will look very unnatural. Pastel pink and purple leopard print is of course very natural ;)

Add in a pink background around the blobs.

Then add a dark purple border around the blobs. The border should be broken up and rough. Like this:

Finished the back part :D Now the front. I decided to draw a swirly ribbon that ends in a heart. You should draw your picture in the lightest colour you have, I used light pink for the heart and light purple for the ribbon.

I then outlined in a darker pink/purple.

Lastly I added shading with a very dark colour. Shadows are very important in giving simple designs like this depth ^_^

I found a white paint pen laying around so I used it to add a couple of highlights. to the ribbon. I also added some small dots around the ribbon.

And you’re done!

Nice and simple and it doesn’t take long at all!

Close up:

I am quite pleased with the end result! I also love the idea that for $10 I can have sneakers that look like anything that I can pull out of my imagination :D

Time to take them for a spin!

I hope you are all having an awesome Sneaker Sunday and if you want to see what Valerie did with her sneakers just head over to her blog and check it out! |
I love these!
Will definitely have to try myself, I have a whole drawer of Sharpies :)

I love Sharpies! Let me know how yours turn out :D
Wow, those are so cute! I’ve always loved the idea of customizing sneakers but I’m always afraid I’ll mess up. xD Thanks for another great tutorial!
Aww you should totally give it a try, just draw with pencil first or chalk as suggested in the comments until you’re happy with the design!
These are so amazing!! I have the same white sneakers but I never wear them cos they’re plain and boring! Yayyy! As soon as my assessments are over, I’m going to customise :D ! …Hmmm, I want copic markers :( Most of my markers/texters/etc are quite dark(?) :C

Oh you should totally do this! Copic markers are really good but super expensive, I felt a little guilty using fancy art markers on sneakers XD You should check Office Works, I think I saw Sharpies on sale for like $1 and there were lots of pastels!
If you use fabric chalk you can draw your designs before making them permanent.
I have a pair of chucks from high school that my friends and I doodled on during study hall.
What a great idea Reece! I used to wear chucks like 24/7 in high school XD
Those are very cute and the design on them is just so professional looking. I love the way you did the leopard print!
Thank you so much Caro, that’s a huge compliment! I am a huge sucker for leopard print in the right setting, pastels for the win!
ooo so cute xxx
Aww thanks :)
Those are gorgeous! I bought a bunch of canvas sneakers for $5 each and I’ve been tizzying them up to sell on etsy. I can’t wait until they’re all finished.

Have you tried spraying it with Scotchgard to waterproof it??
I haven’t tried scotchgard but that’s a good idea ^_^ I think I probably wouldn’t bother at the moment because I don’t go anywhere wet but definitely in future :D Thanks!
Beautiful!!! *o* If only I could draw even just half as well as you, I’d totally try this out!!! But at this point, it would just look like my shoes did back when I doodled on them during class in junior high >_>;; Instead I’ll just keep staring at your pictures XD Really, excellent job with these!!!

Nice!!! Are you going to sell them Violet? *wink
Haha I don’t think so, maybe I’ll take commissions if anyone really wants some!
Oohh, looks fun! I might try this over Christmas break with a pair of old sneakers I have. I’ll need to bleach them first, they’re a little greyed. But, I’ll get me some markers! And maybe take a trip to AC Moore. I’ll get some rhinestones and bows. Decoden sneakers!
I’ve done deco sneakers before and they look awesome! You just have to make sure to use flexible glue so it doesn’t all flake off, I hope it turns out really well for you!
